What treatments can be used for nail fungus?

There are several treatments that can be used to treat nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis. These treatments include:

  • Topical antifungal medications: These medications are applied directly to the affected nail and are typically used for mild to moderate cases of nail fungus. Common topical antifungal medications include ciclopirox and amorolfine. We provide the most effective topical treatment in the clinic.

  • Debridement: This is a procedure in which a healthcare provider removes the infected portion of the nail in order to allow the antifungal medication to reach the site of the infection.

  • Laser therapy: This treatment uses a specialized laser to kill the fungi that cause nail fungus. Laser therapy is typically reserved for severe cases of nail fungus that have not responded to other forms of treatment. It is needed to note that the evidence of the treatment is limited and thus not provided at our clinic.

  • Oral antifungal medications: These medications are taken by mouth and are typically prescribed for severe cases of nail fungus or for people who have not responded to other forms of treatment. Common oral antifungal medications include terbinafine and itraconazole.

It is important to note that nail fungus can be difficult to treat and may require a combination of different treatments in order to be effectively managed. It is also important to maintain good hygiene and keep the affected nail clean and dry in order to prevent the infection from spreading or recurring.
